Driving
The work
This is school-run work, which means early starts, a fixed route, and the same children most days. It is not the job for someone who wants a busy Friday night and a big screen of pings. The value you bring is that you turn up, at the same time, in a way the child recognises — and that when something is off, you say so to the office instead of solving it yourself. Pay, hours and vehicle arrangements are being finalised now and we will publish them here rather than keep them for the interview.
What makes SEND transport different
A child who needs the same seat, the same greeting and the same route every day is not being difficult; that routine is what makes the journey possible. SEND work rewards patience over speed and consistency over initiative. It also asks you to hold a line that ordinary private hire does not: route information stays with the route, conversations about a child stay with the office, and nothing gets arranged directly with a parent at the door because it seemed easier at the time.
What we look for
Calm, punctual, and able to work inside a process rather than around it. You will need the licences the work requires, and we will be specific about that when our own operator licences are granted and we know exactly what we are asking for. Beyond that, the thing we are actually screening for is whether you understand that you are part of a child's school day. Drivers who get that tend to stay, and routes that keep the same driver are the ones families stop worrying about.

What we are doing is keeping a register of people who want to hear first. Send us your name, the area you can work, and whether you have driven school or SEND transport before. When we are licensed in your area, you will get a real conversation rather than a mass email.
Passenger assistants
The passenger-assistant role
A passenger assistant is the reason a difficult route becomes a routine one. The job is to meet each child, support them on and off the vehicle, keep the journey steady, and let the driver drive. On some routes that is a quiet twenty minutes; on others it is the most skilled work in the vehicle. It suits people who are unhurried, who notice small changes in someone's mood, and who do not need a situation to be dramatic to take it seriously.
A typical morning
You meet the driver, check the route information for the morning, and go. Each child is greeted the way that child needs greeting, which you will know because it is on the route and because you have done it before. You support boarding, you keep the journey calm, and at school you hand over to the member of staff who is expecting you. If something has changed — a child not there, a parent with a question, a road closed — it goes to the office and the office deals with it.
What we look for
Patience, reliability, and a clear sense of where the boundaries are. Passenger assistants see families on their difficult mornings, which means the ability to be warm without becoming informal matters as much as anything on a CV. Experience with SEND, additional needs, care or classroom support is genuinely useful; not having it is not a barrier if the temperament is right. As with drivers, we will publish the specific requirements once our licences are granted and the process is signed off.

We will come back to you when there is real work in your area, and we will be straight with you about timing rather than keeping you warm.

Driver
School transport driving, mostly SEND routes: an early start, a fixed run, and largely the same children each day. The skill is consistency — being there when you said, driving the way the route needs, and telling the office when something is off instead of handling it yourself at the door. We will publish pay, hours and vehicle arrangements on this page once they are settled, rather than saving them for an interview.
Passenger assistant
On many SEND routes the assistant is the reason the journey works. You meet each child, support them on and off, keep the mood steady, and let the driver concentrate on driving. Experience from care, classroom support or SEND settings transfers well. So does simply being someone who does not get flustered and does not take a bad morning personally.
Office and dispatch
The office is where a Velgo day is actually run: routes planned before they are needed, cover thought about before someone calls in sick, and one clear answer going to the school, the family and the council instead of three different ones. It suits people who write clearly, hand over properly, and would rather ask a question early than apologise later.
How we expect people to work
Turn up prepared. Speak to children, families and school staff with respect. Keep communication where it belongs, so there is a record and the next person is not guessing. Do not put a child's details into an informal message because it was quicker. Ask early when something is unclear. None of this is remarkable — it is just the difference between transport a family stops worrying about and transport they do not.

What we are doing is keeping a register: your name, the area you can work, and anything relevant you have done before. When we are licensed where you are, you get a real conversation. If it turns out to be slower than we hoped, we will tell you that too.
